Unusual RC Toys

April 25th, 2010

Today let’s talk about those  unusual (call it weird or bizarre if you wish) RC Toys. As you can guess, most of the radio control toys aren’t meant for racing unlike those Nitro RC or Jet RC, and yes most of them are electric powered.

RC Tarantula

Spiders? Not scary. Big creeping spider? Now that’s quite scary, but scary enough to scare most of the girls! This tarantula model RC has a furry body, size of a small dog, and it creeps around the floor. Best used on hard surfaces, since carpet hinders this radio controlled toy. Unlike real spiders (but like real spiders in comic books), the legs are delicate, so handle with care.

If you’re REALLY planning to freak a girl with this toy… Just don’t let her smash this toy to smithereens.

Radio Control I-Fly Wasp

Radio Controlled Wasp

Forget the spider above. If you really want to freak someone out, send a buzzing giant wasp. Uh, yea, on the second look it’s not quite scary (but it’s kinda cool), but most people would probably freak out when they see a huge… buzzing wasp on their way. It flaps its wings like a bird or insect. Comes with spare wings. Will fly for 15 minutes or more between charges. So in conclusion, this is actually… an RC Airplane, right?

I don’t think people would whack this toy like the spider above, so don’t worry… I hope.

RC Superman

It’s a wasp! It’s a plane! NO! It’s SUPERMAN!!

Who would’ve thought? The Superman RC toy is one such thing to have; especially because unlike normal Superman figures this one is an RC toy and it actually flies just like the real one!

This toy is plain cool, enough said.

Electric RC Airplanes – Basics

RC electric airplanes

RC electric airplanes

Airplane RC Models powered by electric motors were very uncommon, due to the excessive weight of the power system and battery, most of them are fueled by liquids such as nitro. However, the electric RC airplane has become commonplace, especially in models meant for beginner pilots.

Electric power advantages include reliability, convenience, low noise, low vibration, and clean operation. However modern electric airplane motors, combined with advanced batteries, have increased the performance of electric RC airplane by leaps and bounds.

There are three main types of battery packs in use for electric RC planes motors. These are Nickel Cadmium (NiCad), Nickel Metal Hydride (NiMH) and Lithium Polymer (LiPo). LiPo batteries are lighter for a given application, but are more expensive than NiCad or NiMH.

Electric RC plane types include powered sailplanes, indoor flyers, scale models, aerobatic models, and ducted fan (Jet RC-type). Virtually any type of RC Toys (Remote Control Toys) such as RC Boats, RC Helicopters, RC trucks/cars, or even RC Tank can now be electric powered.

Flying an Radio Controlled Toy Airplane is not as difficult as you may think. Electric Airplanes that are ready to fly (RTF) or almost ready to fly (ARF) are perfect for the first time flyer. With a little practice, these electric Radio Control Toy Airplanes can be flown in the park or even in your own backyard.

Select an open space and flat ground for your first time fly with no crowds, high buildings or electric lines nearby, and you’re ready to go. Most electric RC Airplanes are made of complex material of high strength, so they are not easily damaged even hitting the ground. So, enjoy your flight!

Starting Radio Control Car as a Hobby

Some people who develop an interest in radio controlled cars (or RC trucks) get into it because they have seen people doing it who have worked long and hard at the hobby. Serious hobbyists often spend enormous amounts of time and hundreds of dollars building each remote control car. These remote control cars are built not only for their appearance, but for amazing speeds and durability as well.

It is best to build your first remote control car with some form of kit. One type of kit includes everything needed to build your RC trucks/cars. It comes with the radio components, the motor, and the model for the car.

Your first radio controlled car will not be fast enough to go up against the cars of dedicated radio control hobbyists. There are several factors to consider before choosing which type of RC Toy cars to buy. If the intended user is a young child, say under 13, then you might be better off purchasing the relatively inexpensive mini radio control cars that run on batteries, you can find those electric RCs almost everywhere. If an adult or older child will be using the radio control cars, then you have a much wider selection to choose from. Of course, the mini cars are fun for all ages, but there are also larger all-electronic cars as well as beefy gas-powered vehicles, and even those Nitro RC monsters!

Expect to pay anywhere from fifty dollars to hundreds of dollars for the big kid RC model cars. Not only are the cars bigger and more powerful, but they come with a much more sophisticated radio control transmitter.

If you opt to buy the high-ticket models of radio controlled toy cars, your expenses don’t stop with the initial purchase.

If you are just starting out in the radio control toy car hobby, I suggest that you purchase one of the inexpensive electric or gas models first. One of the great things about being a radio control car hobbyist is how many other people share your interests.
