RC Boats

Thursday, March 4th, 2010

Even though RC Boat are not traditionally as popular as other RCs such as remote control cars, RC trucks, RC planes, and radio controlled helicopters or even RC Tanks they have a very devote following. And just like all radio controlled toys, there is a lot of consideration to keep in mind before jumping into Radio Controlled Boats.

That shape defines the boat and its overall performance in the water.

Here are the five shapes that RC Toy Boats come in:

Deep V’s historically the most popular of RC boats, the Deep V’s capture top speed time and again. So named because of the V shape hull, this shape allows the boat to absorb a large amount of impact from big waves in choppy waters.

Catamarans are the two sponsors RC boats you see with off-shore race boats. They have incredible stability because of the two separate point of contact with the water, although this makes increase drag and can’t reach the top speed.

Hydroplanes skim across water. To simplify things, just see this type of boat as F1 Boat.

Sailboats are by far the slowest and most relaxing boat out there. This kind of boats isn’t pushed by engine; you merely control the direction and the length of sail, quite difficult to operate.

Mini’s a great introduction to the world of Remote Control Toy boating. Just as the name suggests, this type of boat is small. They’re mostly RTR (Ready to Race)

That’s about the shape. Now let’s talk about the power source.

Gasoline powered – Similar to what you would use with a weed whacker, Radio Control Toy Boats can run off a gasoline and oil mixture. Remember that gasoline powered boats will have a very realistic sound as the engine is roared.

Electric powered – Sometimes you are going to want to put your boat somewhere with noise ordinances. In order to have the same experience but without that noise, electric RC boats are preferred

Nitro powered – Can be found at most local hobby store. This will cost a bit more, but safer, and will be worth it since you won’t have to mix gas and oil together yourself.

If you’re thinking about buying an RC boat, there are several things that you must consider before making the final choice. If you’re a small time user and you only want one to drive in the pool then pick your favorite electric RC boat. If you’re a more advanced user and you actually want to drive ultra fast, be sure to get a gas RC boat to make that happen.

Radio Controlled Boats As a Hobby?

Radio controlled boating can be a wonderful, rewarding hobby. You can get a very small model, or very large models. The boats are directed remotely from a hand held controller system that fine tunes boat movements out on the water.

If you have many options, and the bodies of water range in size, you have many more options in boats.

The two most common types of radio controlled boats are sport boats and racers. Sport boats are generally a good choice for beginning hobbyists. There are three main types of systems on these boats: electrical, gas, and nitro. Nitro is mostly reserved for racers. Electrical RC boats are quiet, and do not go as fast as nitro powered boats.

Toy grade models are electric and run on batteries and will work in the pool or pond. Larger electric boat models are considered serious pieces of machinery and typically can achieve speeds of 15 – 25 MPH. These come in all sizes from speed boats to cruisers to grand sail boats that ply the lake.

Gas boats run on petrol and thus will achieve higher speeds (35 – 50 MPH) than both electric and nitro boats. Gas boats primarily come in speed boat configurations as they are built to race. Radio Controlled Boats have a large range of prices depending on the size, power source, workmanship and complexity of design.

Nitro boats run on a different fuel source, nitro-methane. They will run longer than electric boats as well as substantially faster. These boats are the next step up from electric boats as they require more skill to handle. Performance and enjoyment are best in greater water surface area than electric boats.

Toy grade entry level boats typically run under $100 ready to go out of the box. Electric RC boats with substantial design and power will run anywhere from $150 – $400. Nitro and Gas power boats have sophisticated designs with performance and speed features built in and will run from $350 – $1,500.

RC boats are a great hobby for RC enthusiasts and marine enthusiasts alike. Radio Controlled boats couple the fun of outdoor water recreation with personal skill.

What to Consider When Buying a Radio Controlled Boat

As a hobby, RC boats are a great way to challenge both yourself and others. Radio controlled boats are a fun and rewarding hobby, that could be either relaxing or exhilarating depending on your needs.

Radio controlled toys such as boats are a great way of passing the time and enjoying yourself. RC boats are classified in several different ways. The three types of motors that drive the boats are electric, gas, and nitro.

While each version has their ardent enthusiasts, the electric radio controlled boats are the more popular among the three. The fastest radio controlled boats are usually either hydroplanes or catamaran hull designs. Some of the best radio controlled boats are scale models of actual watercraft. Between nitro and gas powered units, the nitro rc boats are typically less costly than gas boats.

Despite the fact that many radio controlled boats are very expensive, you can find an electric RC boat that is decent for under $100. When you are choosing a remote controlled boat, keep in mind that both the nitro and gas radio controlled boats are a bit more difficult to maintain than electric boats. Also, a little more talent and skill is needed for the nitro and gas boats when compared to the electric boats.

Buying a ready build radio controlled boat is by far the easiest option. But building your own boat can be much more satisfying

Electric are more popular because they are cheap and easier to run straight out of the box. Electric radio controlled boats come in a number of sizes, from the very small and slow pool toy RC boats to the very fast medium sized RC boat. The main problem with the electric boats is that as the batteries loose power the boat become slower.

Nitro boats utilize Nitro-Methane fuel which is very powerful and makes for a fast boat, but the main problems with Nitro powered radio controlled boats are that they are a little more complicated to run as you will need to use a special starter kit to get them going and the fuel is about 4 times the price of a gas boat.

Gas radio controlled boats run on regular car gas with oil combined in the fuel. Then there is the radio controlled sail boat.

Recommendation for a gift is one of the models that can be run as a boat, a plane, or an RC car, like trucks.
